Apple has reportedly postponed the launch of its long-rumoured smart home display as the company continues work on a major overhaul of Siri and its broader artificial intelligence strategy.

According to multiple reports, the device, internally known as J490, had originally been planned for release in early 2025 before being pushed back to March this year. Apple is now targeting September 2026, likely alongside the expected launch of the iPhone 18 lineup.

The delay highlights Apple’s ongoing efforts to modernise Siri and integrate more advanced AI capabilities across its ecosystem. The redesigned voice assistant is expected to play a central role in the company’s next generation of devices, including the smart home display.

The display itself is reportedly finished from a hardware perspective, but Apple is holding it back until the upgraded Siri platform is ready. The company is believed to be aiming to ship the device alongside iOS 27, which will introduce major changes to Siri’s interface and underlying AI models.

The product is designed to act as a central smart home hub, similar to Amazon’s Echo Show or Google’s Nest Hub. Early details suggest the device will feature a 7-inch square display that can attach to a speaker base or be mounted on a wall.

One of its headline features is said to be facial recognition, allowing the display to identify users and surface personalised information such as calendar events, reminders, news preferences and music.

The interface is also expected to resemble the Apple Watch’s circular app layout, with support for features like FaceTime calls, smart home controls and media playback.

Apple is reportedly planning a broader push into AI-driven hardware, including smart glasses, camera-equipped AirPods and wearable AI devices. Many of these projects are tied to the rollout of the new Siri platform.

While Apple has yet to confirm the device publicly, the smart home display is widely expected to be the first step in a larger smart home strategy aimed at competing with Amazon and Google in connected home devices.
