Video Games & Violence Closer Than Smoking & Cancer

By Michelle Starr | Monday | 01/03/2010

COMMENT: Psychologist Dr Wayne Warburton has claimed that the link between games and violence is much stronger than the link between smoking and lung cancer.

In a news report on Channel Ten last night, Dr Warburton told the Channel's reporter, "It's much greater than the effect of smoking on lung cancer."

The news report also described an incident in Kings Cross in which a young man's throat was slashed, and an incident in Melbourne in which a bouncer's cheek was cut open—without explaining how exactly these incidents were related to video games.

It also showed a clip of what appeared to be an on-field scrap between players during a televised soccer match.

The news report said that "experts" were making claims about the effects of violent games on a child's development, without actually saying who these experts are or which reports and studies they were quoting.

"There's a study showing that the average child sees in their childhood an average of 16,000 murders and 200,000 acts of violence," Dr Warburton said.

The only two "experts" shown speaking were Dr Warburton and Angry Anderson.

The news report also showed clips from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, calling it "Modern Warfare: Call of Duty 2".

The report can be viewed here.
